Our Story

Born from the
tides of Ocracoke

Down Point Decoys sits along the quiet stretch of Irvin S. Garrish Highway where the road meets the sound. We're a small, hands-on workshop dedicated to the art of waterfowl decoy carving β€” a tradition passed down through generations of Outer Banks hunters and craftspeople.

Every piece that leaves our shop is carved from sustainable materials, painted by hand with attention to species-accurate detail, and built to endure β€” whether it's sitting in a marsh blind or on a mantelpiece. We welcome collectors, hunters, and anyone who appreciates fine craftsmanship.

The Craft

From blank wood
to living art

The process is unhurried. Each decoy moves through our hands slowly β€” carved, shaped, sanded, painted, and sealed with the same patience the coast demands.

01

Select the Wood

We choose seasoned, sustainable blanks β€” cedar, basswood, or pine β€” each chosen for grain and weight.

02

Carve the Form

Hand tools shape every curve. No molds, no shortcuts β€” just blade, wood, and years of practiced instinct.

03

Paint the Details

Species-accurate plumage, eye by eye, feather by feather. We reference field guides and decades of observation.

04

Seal & Ship

A final coat of marine-grade sealant protects the finish. Each piece is inspected, signed, and ready for its new home.
